Jewellery cleaning & care

Tarnishing is the enemy of anyone with precious metal jewellery, and sterling silver is no exception. While your Lady Bricks jewellery is made to last, some level of tarnishing is normal and your jewellery will need to be cleaned from time to time.

How to clean your jewellery

A simple way of cleaning your jewellery is in lukewarm water with a few drops of liquid dish soap. Mix the water until bubbles form and then soak your jewellery in it for five to 10 minutes. Use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to clean in any little gaps, and then rinse in warm water. Gently dry your jewellery with a silver cloth or other soft cloth or towel, like a microfibre one — but don’t use courser towels or paper as they might scratch the silver.

While warm, soapy water should definitely be able to do the job, you can also get various silver polishes and cleaners, as well as polishing cloths, which have chemicals in them to remove tarnish and are very soft so they don’t scratch the metal. If you use a polishing cloth, use it until it’s black before throwing it away and don’t wash it.

Don’t clean or dry your jewellery with coarse towels, tissue paper, or paper towels, as they can scratch the silver.

How to care for your jewellery day-to-day

As well as the occasional clean, there are a few things you can do day-to-day to help keep your jewellery looking shiny and at its best.

  • Ideally remove jewellery before showering, bathing, or swimming, as toiletries and chemicals in pools can cause it to tarnish.

  • Similarly, avoid spraying perfume or getting creams directly on your jewellery.

  • You should also remove your jewellery before doing any cleaning with bleaches, chemicals, or other cleaning products as they can also cause your jewellery to tarnish.

  • When you’re not wearing your jewellery, store it in its Lady Bricks packaging or in an airtight bag or tub and keep it out of direct sunlight.

  • To avoid knocking or even misshaping your jewellery, avoid wearing it for activities where it might get hurt, like gardening, heavy lifting, sports or the gym, for example.
